Good Luck D.C.
Overall Washington D.C. has come along way in the fashion industry and it continues to grow everyday. It has really inspired me and probably many others to open up a boutique in this eclectic area. So far the city may not measure up to New York or Paris but D.C.deffenetly has all off the good qualities to make the town a fashion capitol. Washington D.C. just needs to keep growing.
D.C. Fashion Week
Another surprising fashion event that I didn't know D.C. had was D.C. Fashion Week. D.C. fashion week is trying to establish Washington as the center of international fashion. Just in February 2010 many countries participated in D.C. fashion week. The countries that participated were Argentina, Cote d'Ivorie, Colombia, Ghana, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Serbia, Thailand, and the United States. This was D.C.'s 12th fashion week they have ever done. Some of the companies that participated were Andrew Nowell Menswear, Artemiza Cruz for Lavill, Kalaa, and many more.
FW
Washington D.C. has lots of important news papers like The Washington Times and The Washington Post but did you know that D.C. has its very own fashion magazine. The D.C. fashion magazine is simple called FW, short for Fashion.Washington. So Chic!, I absolutely love it. FW makes a good point about fashion. FW says "When people think of fashion, they think of Coco Chanel in Paris, Donna Karan in New York or red carpet-walking celebs in L.A. But Washington also deserves recognition as a style capital." In the past this meant Jackie Kennedy in jeweled ball gowns at White House dinners. But these days D.C. is all about a chic, international glamour, with haute boutiques catering to a great clientele. A handful of designers call the area home. Fashion Washington is a new magazine from Washington Post media. The scene in D.C. is increasingly stylish from trend setting diplomats and star studded parties, to fab jewelry lines and store openings. In this magazine you will see the hottest and prettiest new styles. You will also read about the interesting cast of characters including designers, shop owners and famous faces that are making D.C. a hip place to be.
I love D.C. Fashion
Now I would like to talk about what makes the fashion in D.C. so special. From what I have researched Washington D.C. has alot to offer then I even thought. Although it is hard to find boutique websites, I have found some really great stores. D.C just has that it factor. It may not be New York or Los Angeles, but its special. If you really think about it, its a perfect location. People are always visiting there weather its business or pleasure. This paper has inspired me to possibly have my own boutique in Washington D.C.
Nana
Taking a look at Sarah's story starting off at Nana sounds like another good boutique to check out. Nana is a women's clothing shop located in Washington D.C. The store is inspired by all things vintage, modern, handmade, and made perfect for work and play. Nana opened in 2003 by owner Jackie Flanagan. Jackie says the store started all because of Julia Child. After 7 years of working in the corporate work force Jackie was told by her her boyfriend told her that Julia Child didn't know how to cook until she was thirty, so therefore its never to late to start pursuing what you love. Jackie took that advise in and opened her shop. Her inspiration was her grandma. She says "My Nana has such fashion smarts. I look up to her grace and subtle glamour … she is the ultimate stylish, savvy woman.” The store has evolved over the years and Jackie's store Nana is also on U Street. Nana has had very good press from The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Lucky Magazine and much more. Jackie had her own personal interview with Lucky Magazine and The Boston Globe said that Nana is "a small, stylish shop filled with funky designer casual clothing and accessories." This store is definitely one of my favorites so far.

Caramel
Now on my boutique search in D.C. I've come across another fine little store. Just down U Street is a boutique called Caramel. Caramel is owned by Sarah Watkins. She got all of her inspiration from her grandparents. Her grandparents operated and owned grocery stores for 40 years. Ever since Sarah was young she wanted to own her own business like her grandma and grandpa. So she decided to start working to build up to having her own business. She started working at a small local boutique called Nana. She then learned how to run her own business little by little. Then finally she decided she was ready to start her own business. That is when Caramel was created. Sarah has spent the past 16 years managing educational programs and fundraising for non profit organizations. Sarah still spends part of her time as a professional fundraiser and also manages Caramel. The store is named after her grandpa's favorite candy. Caramel has been recognised alot in the press in a very good way. Some of the press includes The Dunpoint Current, Where Magazine, Lucky Magazine, and much more. At the store you can buy men and women clothing very wallet friendly with under the radar labels.
Zarii Designs by Ayrikah Nichole
I also came across a jewelry designer that I thought had some amazing pieces. Ayrikah Nichole designer of Zarii Designs is a local designer from Washington D.C. His stores slogan is, "At Zarii Designs we strive to provide women of the world the opportunity to be true fashionable individuals. All of our items are distinctively crafted and handmade with the essence of true exclusivity and uniqueness." His pieces are very eccentric and one of a kind. Zarii Designs was created in 2008 and since it has started the business just keeps getting better and growing more. Ayrikah Nichole has been designing for 6 years now independently but has been in the industry for 10 years. There has been alot of his designs in photo shoots, local runway shows, and other big events in Washington D.C. The main focus at Zarii Designs is earrings, necklaces, and rings.
The Old Town Boutique
Good boutiques and stored are hard to come by but D.C.'s boutiques definitely have some charm. The most interesting boutiques I've researched so far is The Old Town Boutique District located in Old Town Alexandria. Its the perfect mix of historic charm and world class shopping. In this cute little location you can find many unique and specialty pieces no matter what your style is. Some of the brands that can be found here are Tory Burch, Lilly Pulitzer, Judith Ripka, Diane Von Furstenburg, Kiehl's, Bugaboo, Splendid, Nanette Lepore, L.A.M.B., Thomas the Train, Ergo, Manhattan Toys, Molton Brown, Bettye Muller and more. There is also alot of products that are eco-friendly. The Old Town Boutique District is the regions top retail destination. The Old Town Boutique District is located by the Potomac river four miles from Washington D.C. Its easy to get to because its conveniently located by the metro and you can also go on a water taxi from D.C. or the her National harbor resort. As many other stores you can also shop on their website.
Salon Rouge
On my jorney to find unique and chic beauty supplies I have come accross another store, Salon Rouge. Salon Rouge is a salon located in the Dupoint circle neighborhood on 17th Street in Washington D.C. At Salon Rouge they specialize in hair and skin. All of the workers at Salon Rouge are perfectionist and they have the title of "L'Oreal Professional Elite Hair Salon." They offer hair cuts, color, and styling. They also offer amazing skin treatments. You can even get your nails and make-up done too. The main brands they carry are Aquage, Big Sexy Hair, Dermalogica, DevaConcepts, L'Oreal, and Redken.

D.C. Fashion
Fashion is very important to me as well as many other people. Its an expression of who a person is or how they feel. Well the real definition is a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing, etc. Washington D.C. is suppose to be one of the most diverse cities in the United States so that should equal amazing fashion scene. I'm not going to lie, at first I thought this would be really difficult to write about thinking about the typical politician people wearing suits all of the time. But D.C. has alot more to offer then just dress suits. D.C. has their own fashion week, fashion magazine, fashion college, and many eclectic stores and boutiques. So I am going to explore the stores and boutiques of D.C., what is so special about D.C.'s fashion, and D.C. fashion media.
